The South American DJ Hernan Cattaneo, who is rated number 5 on the current DJ Mag Chart, will play gigs in the VIP Room in Shanghai on May 26.
Just a few years ago, many electronic music fans knew Cattaneo as "Hernan something," or "the guy who plays together with Paul Oakenfold." Now, people know he is Hernan Cattaneo, and his name is as hot as that of Paul Oakenfold on the world DJ list.
Cattaneo's exceptional and elegiac music style has won a laudatory title -- Poet DJ -- from electronic music fans. Even the Australian electronic music band Infusion praised him after attending the Miami Winter Music Conferences.
Cattaneo grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1987 a friend visited Vinylmania in New York City and brought back a sweet taste of Chicago house in the form of Traxx and DJ International pressings, which combined the energy of Europe's electronic music with the soul of American music. After that his life was changed.
His talent was fast becoming recognized and in 1996 he secured the hotly contested residency for a new weekly Saturday club night entitled "Clubland." Within two years the night was being hailed as Argentina's best club.
He then went on to win the "Best DJ" award each year from 1996 to 1998, and got the chance to meet the DJ master Paul Oakenfold, who invited Cattaneo to tour Europe with him.
It was from this point on that universities and clubs throughout Europe began to hear the sounds of Hernan Cattaneo, which in turn, led to his "Perfecto" signing for both the seminal "Deep Funk" and "South America," his first original production and mix compilation respectively.
Then he performed in "Moonpark" together with DJ Sasha during 2002 and 2003 and audiences were awed with his technical proficiency and dark, progressive Latin tribal sound. He immediately vaulted onto the international stage, signed with UK's leading dance music company Renaissance to compile and mix their next Masters compilation.
From its inception in 2000, the Masters series has showcased some of the world's finest DJ talent, a fact that Cattaneo had been aware of.
Cattaneo's album "Renaissance Presents The Masters Series - Hernan Cattaneo Vol. 1 & 2" even helped Renaissance take the chair of mainstream electro music and also won him sixth place in the 2004 DJ Mag.
Cattaneo has laid down a dramatic and dreamy mix in his contribution to the Masters series, making up for a lack of funk with blissful stargazing. Cattaneo's reputation leans toward the more organic, sexier hues of deep house, but this mix is pure progressive house all the way.
Especially in "The Master Series Part 6 - Hernan Cattaneo Vol.2," whose deep Chicago house, precursed with shadowed pounding bass and a mournful, elegiac saxophone, has pushed the romance to new heights.
In the 2005 DJ Mag vote, he again entered the top 10, winning the seventh place. The master DJ artist can be expected to bring another wonderful performance to Shanghai.
